Hedda Askland

Dr. Hedda Askland is an Associate Professor in the School of Humanities, Creative Industries and Social Sciences at the University of Newcastle, specializing in social anthropology. Her research focuses on displacement, mining impacts, and energy transitions, particularly in rural NSW. She has conducted extensive fieldwork in mining communities, examining social and emotional effects of environmental change. Current projects include a ARC-funded study on post-mining landscapes and collaborations with BHP and the Social Impact Alliance. Hedda has taught courses like SOCA1020 and served as an expert witness in land-use court cases. Her work bridges interdisciplinary teams, combining anthropology with architecture, geography, and policy analysis.

Research highlights include coining the term 'eritalgia' to describe displacement trauma, analyzing consultation fatigue in communities, and advocating for place-based policies. Over 50 peer-reviewed publications span journals like Environment and Society and Energy Research & Social Science. Awards include the 2016 Vice Chancellor's Early Career Research Award.
