About
Prof Hazel Screen is the Head of the School of Engineering and Materials Science at Queen Mary University of London and holds the title of Professor of Biomedical Engineering. She leads the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Next Generation Organ-Chip Technologies and co-directs the Centre for Predictive in vitro Models. Her research focuses on understanding tissue mechanics, particularly in tendons and heart valves, with a focus on injury mechanisms and aging effects. She is also a pioneer in organ-on-a-chip technology, developing predictive in vitro models for medical applications.
She holds professional certifications as a Chartered Engineer (CEng) and Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (FIMechE). Her education includes a PhD from London (PhD(Lond)), MRes, and BEng degrees. She has authored over 150 publications in biomechanics and tissue engineering.
Key affiliations include Director of the Organ on a Chip Network, Co-Director of the QMUL-Emulate Organs-on-Chips Centre, and Treasurer of the Association of Biomedical Engineers. Her work integrates multi-scale approaches from molecular to whole-tissue levels, addressing translational challenges in musculoskeletal bioengineering and regenerative medicine.
