About
Haydee Salmun is a Professor of Earth and Environmental Science at Hunter College, CUNY. She holds a Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University (1989), an M.S. from the University of Missouri-St. Louis (1980), and a B.S. from the University of Buenos Aires (1977). She has served as the Undergraduate Adviser for the Environmental Studies major since its approval in 2001 and co-developed its curriculum, including courses like Advanced Oceanography and Introduction to Fluid Mechanics (collaborating with the Physics Department). She directed the Catalyst Scholarship Program at Hunter College and teaches in the Hunter Honors Program. She is also affiliated with the Earth and Environmental Science Ph.D. Program at the CUNY Graduate Center.
Her research focuses on environmental fluid mechanics, climate dynamics, and interdisciplinary modeling of geophysical flows. She investigates small-scale processes' impacts on large-scale environmental systems, including oceanography, coastal dynamics, and climate change. She emphasizes interdisciplinary education, particularly linking physical/mathematical climate science with societal implications. Her commitment to diversity in STEM drives her mentorship and advocacy for women and minorities in science.
Prof. Salmun contributes to research initiatives such as the NASA Planetary Boundary Layer (PBL) Study Team (2021 report) and serves on the editorial board of Advances in Meteorology. She collaborates with research centers like CARSI (Center for Advanced Research of Spatial Information) and CISC (CUNY Institute for Sustainable Cities).
