Hassan Mahfuz

Hassan Mahfuz is a Professor in the Department of Ocean and Mechanical Engineering at Florida Atlantic University (FAU). He leads the Nanocomposites and Structures Laboratory and specializes in computational solid mechanics, experimental stress analysis, and composite/nanostructured materials. His research spans offshore structures, ship design, and advanced material systems.

Education: Ph.D. (Mechanical Engineering, FAU, 1989), M.S. (Mechanical Engineering, FAU, 1986), B.S. (Mechanical Engineering, Bangladesh University of Engineering & Technology, 1975).

Research focuses on nanocomposites, fatigue modeling of composite turbine blades, and high-temperature applications. Current grants include $225k from the Air Force Research Lab (AFRL) for organic matrix nanocomposite studies and $215k from IHI Corporation for composite ocean turbine blade analysis.

Teaching includes undergraduate courses in structural analysis, mechanics, and graduate courses on finite element methods and composite materials.

Advised over 50 M.S. and Ph.D. students, with notable work on nanocomposite synthesis and structural durability. Collaborates with industry partners like Boeing, NASA, and the Office of Naval Research (ONR).
