Haruko Cook

Haruko Cook is a Professor of Japanese linguistics and a cooperating graduate faculty member in the Department of Second Language Studies at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. Her research focuses on Sociolinguistics, Language Socialization, Pragmatics, and Discourse Analysis, with a particular emphasis on Japanese workplace communication and cultural identity formation. She holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Southern California (1988) and an M.A. in Linguistics from California State University Long Beach (1978).

Her work explores how language shapes and reflects social roles, particularly in professional environments. Key areas include the analysis of speech style shifts, directive communication strategies, and the socialization processes of new employees in Japanese companies. She has contributed to seminal volumes such as Japanese at Work (2018), examining politeness, power dynamics, and persona construction in workplace discourse.
