Hartmut Wessler

Hartmut Wessler is Professor of Media and Communication Studies at University of Mannheim and Principal Investigator at the Mannheim Centre for European Social Research. He directs research on media discourse and public deliberation in comparative perspective.

His methodological innovations include:

• Multimodal content analysis of text and images
• Automated cross-cultural news analysis
• Deliberation metrics for public discourse
• Network analysis of journalistic sources

Research examines mediated responses to terrorism, climate change communication, and transnational public spheres. Current projects analyze how journalistic cultures shape global event coverage across democratic systems.
