Hartmut Gimpel

Hartmut Gimpel serves as Professor of Measurement Technology and Sensor Technology at Konstanz University of Applied Sciences within the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Institute of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (INM). Appointed in 2019 after 13 years in industry, he teaches core courses across mechanical, automotive, and systems engineering programs while leading the Measurement Technology Laboratory.

His academic foundation includes a physics degree from Heidelberg University (1996-2002) with international study at the University of Illinois, followed by advanced research at Heidelberg's Physics Institute and the Max Planck Institute. Doctoral work focused on amplified ultrashort pulse laser systems and atomic/plasma physics experiments.

Research centers on measurement systems with expertise in optical sensors, Lidar technology, and image processing. Current investigations develop calibration methodologies for mirror-enhanced 2D-Lidar systems, addressing critical challenges in mobile robot navigation and terrain mapping through innovative optical configurations.

Recent publications (2022-2024) demonstrate a concentrated focus on practical robotics applications, particularly advancing ground detection capabilities and mirror-based sensor setups for autonomous navigation systems. This work bridges industrial sensor development with academic research in robotic perception.

Professor Gimpel actively supervises student projects and theses through university-industry collaborations, with current offerings listed on Moodle. His laboratory work emphasizes hands-on sensor system development and data analysis techniques for engineering students.

He directs the Measurement Technology Laboratory at INM, which supports practical instruction in sensor systems, optical metrology, and data acquisition across multiple degree programs including Mechanical and Automotive Engineering.
