R. Giles Harrison is a Professor of Atmospheric Physics at the University of Reading's Department of Meteorology since 2008, with concurrent Visiting Professor roles at the University of Bath (Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering) and the University of Oxford (Department of Physics/AOPP). He holds a ScD from the University of Cambridge (2014), PhD from Imperial College London (1992), and undergraduate degree in Natural Sciences (Physics) from Cambridge (BA 1988, MA 1992).
- Research Focus: Instrumentation for atmospheric measurements, aerosol electrification, cloud physics, and solar-terrestrial interactions.
- Key Contributions: Developed novel balloon/UAV-based sensors for turbulence, cosmic rays, and volcanic plume electrification. Authored a major textbook on meteorological instrumentation.
Recipient of the 2021 Christiaan Huygens Medal (EGU) and 2016 Appleton Medal (IoP). Supervised over 50 graduate students and 10 PhD candidates. Active in public engagement through citizen science and historical accounts of scientific methods.
