About
Harald Kunstmann is a Professor at the Institute of Geography within the Faculty of Applied Computer Science at the University of Augsburg. He also serves as the Founding Director of the Centre for Climate Resilience since 2021 and has been the Deputy Director of KIT Campus Alpin since 2015. Holding the Chair for Regional Climate and Hydrology since 2009, his work bridges atmospheric and hydrological systems.
- University of Augsburg (2009–present)
- KIT Campus Alpin (1999–present)
- Centre for Climate Resilience (2021–present)
His research focuses on regional climate change impacts on hydrology, including:
- Dynamic and statistical downscaling of meteorological fields
- Fully coupled atmospheric and hydrological modeling
- Commercial Microwave Links (CMLs) for precipitation measurement
- Geostatistic merging of hydrometeorological variables
- Seasonal climate forecasting
- Land-atmosphere interactions
Kunstmann’s recent publications emphasize climate resilience in water resource management, with a strong focus on semi-arid regions and Alpine systems. His work integrates observational data with advanced modeling techniques to improve flood forecasting, drought management, and seasonal climate projections.
Scientific honors include:
- Kavli Frontier of Science Fellow (2014)
- Water Resources Prize (Rüdiger Kurt-Bode Foundation – Stifterverband, 2021)
