Max Planck Institute for Sustainable MaterialsAbout
Professor Hans-Martin Henning is Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE in Freiburg and holds the Chair for Solar Energy Systems at the Institute for Sustainable Systems Engineering (INATECH) within the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Freiburg. He also chairs Germany's Expert Council on Climate Issues and the Fraunhofer Energy Alliance.
- Education: PhD in Physics from University of Oldenburg (1993)
- Key Appointments: Director, Fraunhofer ISE (2017-present); Professor, KIT (2014-2017)
His research focuses on building energy technology and energy system analysis, particularly holistic simulation and optimization of complex energy systems. He develops low-exergy concepts for heat supply, heat pump systems, and renovation roadmaps for multi-family buildings. His work spans national/regional energy strategies, sector coupling, and hydrogen technologies.
Recent publications analyze climate-neutral energy architectures, hydrogen's role, and spatially resolved energy modeling. He contributes to Germany's greenhouse gas emission calculations and EU Green Deal alignment.
Teaching activities include Energy in Buildings, Technische Thermodynamik, and Technologie Erneuerbarer Energien.
