Prof. Dr. Hans-Günther Machens is a Professor and Director of the Department of Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery at the Klinikum rechts der Isar of the Technical University of Munich (TUM). He specializes in regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, and reconstructive surgery, with a focus on angiogenesis induction, matrix-based therapies, and erythropoietin applications.
Education: Studied human medicine in Hanover, Göttingen, Heidelberg, and Chicago (1981–1988). Completed a habilitation in 1999 on cell-based gene transfer for angiogenesis. Appointed to TUM in 2007.
Research interests include:
- Matrix-based angiogenesis and tissue regeneration
- Autoregeneration of skin, fat, cartilage, and bone
- Innovative approaches to wound therapy
- Systemic and local erythropoietin applications
Key achievements: Led the world’s first bilateral limb transplant in 2008, initiated BMBF-funded clinical studies, and developed patented regenerative techniques. His research has produced over 200 publications.
Awards: Recipient of the Heinz Maier Leibnitz Medal (2008), Karl Max von Bauernfeind Medal (2008), and Brettschneider Prize (2004), among others.
Leadership: Founded the CTA team for limb transplants at TUM and chairs national and international research networks. Active in professional organizations like the Plastic Surgery Research Council (USA) and the German Society for Regenerative Medicine (DGRM).
