Hans Fidom

Hans Fidom is a Full Professor of Organ Studies at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, holding the Chair Organ Studies since 2010. His position is sponsored by Stichting Het Orgelpark, where he also leads the Orgelpark Research Program. He specializes in the intersection of organ music, sound heritage, and technology, focusing on hyperorgans and historical sound concepts. His research integrates disciplines like Musicology, Heritage Studies, and Science and Technology Studies.

Education includes a doctorate from VU Amsterdam (2002) on German organ scenes (1880–1918). He teaches courses on Sound Heritage, Music Philosophy, and Artistic Research in Organ Studies. His work bridges academic and artistic domains, emphasizing listening as a core musical activity.

Research themes include improvisation, organ building history, and the philosophical dimensions of music-making. He organizes the annual International Orgelpark Symposium and publishes in the Orgelpark Research Reports series. His PhD supervision includes completed projects on 19th-century improvisation and 15th-century organ design.

Professional activities include roles as examiner for the Dutch School for Organ Experts, former editor of Het Orgel, and involvement with international organ-related foundations. Ancillary activities include leadership in the Orgelpark Research Program since 2020.
