Hans C. Bernstein

Hans C. Bernstein serves as Professor in Microalgae and Microbiome Engineering at UiT The Arctic University of Norway and holds the UArctic Chair in Biotechnology for Arctic Greenhouse Gas Management. He leads the Microalgae and Microbiomes Research Group (M2RG), driving interdisciplinary research at the intersection of molecular microbial ecology and bioengineering to address Arctic environmental challenges.

His research focuses on marine microbiome dynamics, particularly diatom community interactions and CO₂ adaptation mechanisms influencing Arctic carbon cycling. Bernstein pioneers microbial synthetic biology tools for carbon capture, sequestration, and utilization, leveraging ecosystem-inspired biotechnological innovations through ARC – The Arctic Centre for Sustainable Energy. His work develops engineered genetic circuits for marine microbiomes to enhance performance in industrial bioreactors and future microbial biofactories.

Bernstein actively mentors early-career scientists and cultivates global research networks, emphasizing the integration of ecological principles with advanced engineering. Through initiatives like the PHOTOSYNTECH PhD training school, he promotes knowledge transfer and empowers emerging researchers to develop sustainable solutions for climate change mitigation. His leadership in Arctic sustainability projects demonstrates commitment to translating scientific discovery into practical industrial applications for environmental stewardship.
