About
Hanno Sauer is Associate Professor of Philosophy at Utrecht University's Department of Philosophy & Religious Studies and Principal Investigator of the ERC-funded project PROGRESS (The Enemy of the Good: Towards a Theory of Moral Progress). His research develops systematic accounts of moral change and progress through historical and theoretical frameworks.
He teaches courses in ethics, metaethics, and political philosophy while leading research that integrates moral psychology with philosophical analysis of moral development. His influential publications examine moral cognition, debunking arguments in ethics, and the psychological foundations of moral judgment.
Professor Sauer's current ERC project (2019-2024) investigates the mechanisms and criteria of moral progress, drawing from cultural history and normative theory. His recent books provide comprehensive theories of moral teleology and historical analyses of morality's cultural invention.
