Hannah Schühle-Lewis

Dr. Hannah Schühle-Lewis is a Postdoctoral Research Assistant at the University of Oxford’s Faculty of English, specializing in Middle English literature, manuscript studies, and editorial work. Her research focuses on late-medieval religious culture, particularly the interplay of papal/secular authority, nationalism in reformist thought, and Wycliffite political ideas. She is a key member of the Medieval Vernacular Bibles as Unity, Diversity and Conflict project, co-led by Dr. Elizabeth Solopova and Prof. Freimut Löser, examining vernacular Bible translations in England and German-speaking regions. Her editorial work includes British Library MS Add. 24202 and the Declaracion on the Bible, a Wycliffite summary of biblical exegesis.

Her recent publications include an essay on Wycliffite exegesis methods (2021) and co-edited volumes on late-medieval religious writing and London’s manuscript culture (forthcoming 2025). These projects reflect her expertise in textual compilation, devotional practices, and the entangled communities shaping medieval literature.

Previously, she contributed to the Whittington’s Gift project, recovering London’s lost Guildhall library. Her work bridges manuscript studies with historical context, emphasizing how religious texts shaped medieval intellectual and political landscapes.
