About
Han-Gyu Kim is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering at Mississippi State University. He holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from the University of Washington and B.S. from Yonsei University. His research develops multi-scale models for hypersonic aircraft structures, collaborating with NASA Glenn Research Center, Air Force Research Laboratory, and the Advanced Composites Institute.
Kim's research focuses on composite materials for extreme environments, structural dynamics, damage progression modeling, and nondestructive evaluation. Current projects include characterization of composite material properties for NASA's LS-DYNA models, development of damage models for stitched composites, and carbon composite rotors for electric motors. He established the Aerostructures for Hypersonic Flight Research Lab (AHFRL) where he mentors graduate and undergraduate researchers.
He teaches courses in Elasticity, Composite Materials, Structural Dynamics, and Fracture Mechanics. Kim received Faculty of the Year awards in 2023-2024 and 2024-2025 from his department in recognition of his teaching and research contributions.
