About
Professor Hamzeh Hajiloo is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Carleton University, where he joined in July 2019. His research focuses on understanding structural behavior under fire and extraordinary conditions, with significant contributions to fire safety engineering and structural resilience.
Dr. Hajiloo received his M.A.Sc. from the University of Tehran and his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from Queen's University in 2017. Prior to joining Carleton, he worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Queen's University and served as program coordinator for NSERC CREATE SERA (Sustainable Engineering in Remote Area).
Professor Hajiloo's research spans fire safety engineering, sustainable construction materials at high temperatures, FRP reinforced concrete, FRCM strengthening systems, and AI integration in fire safety applications. His work has significantly advanced fire safety provisions in the ACI 440.11-22 standard. He leads multiple research projects with industry partners, including a five-year collaboration with MST rebar company and investigations into FRCM-strengthened RC beams under fire conditions.
His scientific achievements include the prestigious IIFC Best PhD Thesis Award (2018) and an NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship (which he declined when accepting his faculty position).
- IIFC Best PhD Thesis Award (2018)
- NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship (declined)
Professor Hajiloo chairs Task Group 1 in the American Concrete Institute (ACI) 216 committee, developing rational design documents for concrete structural members under fire exposure. He is also a voting member in ACI 440-H and ACI 216 committees, contributing to international codes and standards.
His research team includes multiple doctoral and master's students working on fire performance of FRP reinforced concrete structures, FRCM strengthening systems, performance-based design methods, AI integration in fire safety, and full-frame structural responses in fires. His collaboration with the NRC Fire Facility Laboratory for full-scale hybrid fire tests demonstrates his commitment to bridging research and practical applications.
