About
Dr. Hamid Charkhkar is a Research Assistant Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Case Western Reserve University and an Investigator at the Louis Stokes Cleveland VA Medical Center's Advanced Platform Technology (APT) Center. His work focuses on developing neurotechnology to restore sensorimotor function in individuals with limb loss or neuromusculoskeletal impairments. He leads a multidisciplinary team creating sensory neuroprostheses (SNP) that provide real-time sensory feedback via peripheral nerve stimulation, enhancing balance, locomotion, and daily activities for amputees.
Education: PhD in Biomedical Engineering. His research integrates basic science and clinical methods, emphasizing translational neuroengineering. He has secured $6.7M in funding across three major projects, authored 18 high-impact journal articles, and serves as a reviewer for 15+ journals/conferences.
Research interests include neuroprosthetics, sensory-enabled assistive devices, and neural interface technologies. His work bridges laboratory innovations to clinical applications, aiming to improve quality of life through sensory restoration. Key projects involve closed-loop feedback systems linking prosthetic foot pressure data to neural stimulation patterns.
Grants & Collaborations: Co-investigator on $6.7M projects. Active in the APT Center's Motion Study Lab and Urological Bio Lab. Professional memberships include IEEE and the Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society.
Labs/Teams: Leads research at the APT Center's Sensory Neuroprosthetics group. Collaborates with clinicians, engineers, and scientists on milestone-based translational research.
