About
Haluk Ogmen is a Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Denver, serving concurrently as Senior Associate Dean. He previously held leadership roles at the University of Houston, including Department Chair of Electrical & Computer Engineering (2004–2009) and Executive Director of the Center for Neuro-Engineering and Cognitive Science (1988–2016). He also holds an Honorary Visiting Professorship in Computational Neuroscience at the University of Bradford (UK).
Dr. Ogmen earned his B.Sc.A. and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Université Laval, Canada. His research focuses on neuro-engineering, visual perception, and computational models of the brain. Key interests include non-retinotopic visual processing, motion perception, and the dynamics of visual masking. He collaborates with industry partner intuVision to apply these insights to automated video analytics.
His work explores how the visual system constructs form and motion despite ecological constraints like motion blur and dynamic environments. Notable contributions include theories on reference frames in visual processing and the role of masking in perception. He has authored/co-authored influential books such as *Experimental Phenomena of Consciousness* (2007), recognized with the 2008 Choice Outstanding Academic Title Award.
Dr. Ogmen’s awards include Fellowships from the Hanse Institute (2004) and the NIH Central Visual Processing Study Section (2005–2009). His research has been published in top journals like *Vision Research*, *Nature*, and *Psychological Science*.
His grants and collaborations span computational neuroscience, visual dynamics, and neural modeling. He leads interdisciplinary teams investigating the neural basis of perception, with implications for robotics and AI.
