Dr. Hakeem Leonard serves as Assistant Provost for Inclusion, Diversity & Equity and Associate Professor of Music Therapy at Shenandoah University's Conservatory, where he has been employed since 2014. He also coordinates the undergraduate Music Therapy program. Dr. Leonard holds a Bachelor of Arts in Instrumental Performance (Saxophone) from Morehouse College and both Master of Music and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Music Therapy from Florida State University.
Research Focus: His work spans clinical practice and interdisciplinary studies, with primary interests in:
- Mental health interventions through therapeutic music
- Early childhood developmental support
- Student professional development frameworks
- Cross-cultural sensitivity in therapeutic settings
- Non-pharmacological pain management techniques
Professional Practice: With over 10 years in clinical settings, Dr. Leonard has implemented music therapy programs across schools, assisted living facilities, and behavioral health centers. He leads international initiatives in Uganda and Guatemala and consults on music therapy business development.
