HSU Li Yang

HSU Li Yang is a Professor at the National University of Singapore (NUS), holding dual appointments at the Saw Swee Hock School of Public Health (Primary) and the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine. He serves as Vice Dean of Global Health and Programme Leader of Infectious Diseases. His research focuses on antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections, fungal infections, and public health policy. He has held significant roles, including Clinical Director of the National Centre for Infectious Diseases and co-chair of Singapore’s RIE2020 infectious diseases workgroup. Li Yang works part-time with the Ministry of Health and advises the WHO’s Western Pacific Regional Office on antimicrobial resistance surveillance. He founded the Centre for Infectious Disease Epidemiology and Research (CIDER) in 2012 and contributed to Singapore’s National Strategic Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance (2017). His expertise spans clinical practice, policy development, and global health leadership.

Education includes an MBBS from Singapore (1998), Fellowship of the Royal College of Physicians (UK, 2001), and a Master of Public Health from Harvard (2007). Awards include the Hugo Lumbreras Silver Medal for academic excellence and the Monteiro Lectureship award (2014). His research emphasizes antimicrobial resistance, tuberculosis, and pandemic preparedness. He has authored over 120 publications, including key works on SARS-CoV-2, AMR surveillance, and TB management. Current projects involve genomic surveillance of pathogens, regional health cooperation, and post-pandemic antibiotic stewardship. Li Yang engages actively in public discourse through media commentaries on infectious diseases and global health challenges.
