Dr. Gyles Iannone is a Professor in the Department of Anthropology at Trent University, where he also serves as a Research Fellow at the Trent University Archaeological Research Centre. His academic credentials include a Ph.D. in Prehistory from University College London (1996), an M.A. in Anthropology from Trent University (1992), and a B.A. (First Class Honours) in Archaeology from Simon Fraser University (1990).
His research explores early state formations, settlement archaeology, and societal resilience in tropical environments, with emphases on:
- Urbanization and water management systems in classical Southeast Asian states
- Climate change impacts and human-environment interactions in ancient Maya and Burmese societies
- Ritual, kingship, and collapse dynamics through integrated archaeological approaches
Professor Iannone's publications consistently address themes of hydraulic engineering, socio-spiritual entanglements, and settlement reorganization, with 75% of recent works focused on Myanmar's Bagan civilization and 25% on Belizean Maya sites. He employs multidisciplinary methods including geo-spatial analysis, ethnoarchaeology, and epigraphic study.
He currently directs two major projects: The SETS Project (Socio-ecological Entanglement in Tropical Societies) and IRAW@Bagan (Integrated Research on water management in ancient Burma). He is actively recruiting graduate students to investigate settlement patterns and climate adaptation in early states.
