Guy Simpson

Dr Guy Simpson is a Research Fellow in Oncology at the University of Surrey's School of Biosciences. He holds a PhD in 'Optimising therapeutic herpes simplex vectors for cancer' from UCL (2004), an MPhil in Human Endogenous Retroviral research (1997), and a BSc in Bioanalytical Science (1988). His career includes roles as Senior Scientist at UCL/BioVex Ltd (2004–2007) and Research Associate at the University of Liverpool (1995–1999).

Research Interests: Dr Simpson specializes in oncolytic virotherapy, particularly using Coxsackievirus A21 and herpes simplex viruses, targeting bladder, prostate, and pancreatic cancers. His work focuses on viral-mediated immunotherapy, HOX/PBX gene dysregulation, and tumor microenvironment modification. Key projects include the CANON study evaluating CVA21 for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer and investigations into EN2 protein biomarkers.

Publications: His recent work highlights synergistic effects of oncolytic viruses with chemotherapy, immunotherapy resistance mechanisms, and biomarker discovery. Notable studies include the 2023 analysis of ICAM-1 and CVA21 on bladder carcinoma cell lines and a 2024 paper on p53-driven adenoviral immunotherapy for pancreatic cancer.

Labs & Collaborations: Active in interdisciplinary teams exploring viral vectors, immune modulation, and precision oncology. Collaborates with Prof Hardev Pandha and Prof Nicola Annels on translational cancer research projects.
