Professor Guy Maddern is a Professor of Surgery and Head of Discipline at the Adelaide Medical School, University of Adelaide. He is based at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital and holds leadership roles in surgical research and education. Maddern completed his medical degree and PhD at the University of Adelaide, followed by advanced surgical training in Australia and international experience in Switzerland and France.
His research focuses on hepatobiliary surgery, pancreatic cancer treatment, surgical coaching, and health technology assessment. He leads over 20 grants including NHMRC and MRFF funding, totaling millions of dollars. Notable achievements include the Louis Barnett Medal for surgical education and honorary Fellowships from the French Academy of Medicine and American College of Surgeons.
Maddern’s interests span translational research, surgical safety, and innovation. He has pioneered ASERNIP-S for surgical procedure evaluation and contributed to over 600 peer-reviewed publications. Current projects include AI-driven clinical decision tools and prevention of colorectal cancer metastasis.
