About
Gustaf Hugelius is a Professor at Stockholm University's Department of Physical Geography and Vice Director of the Bolin Centre for Climate Research. He co-leads the research unit Landscape, Environment and Geomatics. His work integrates field sampling, Earth Observation data, and spatial modeling to study permafrost carbon dynamics and Arctic-Boreal ecosystem responses to climate change.
His research investigates soil carbon vulnerability in permafrost regions, mercury remobilization from thawing peatlands, and grassland carbon sequestration. He has led >10 Arctic expeditions and coordinates international networks including the Permafrost Carbon Network and RECCAP2. Current projects include EU H2020 Nunataryuk and JPI-Climate COUP.
Hugelius teaches GIS and remote sensing in Stockholm University's Master's Programme in Geomatics, emphasizing applications in environmental science. His publications focus on permafrost carbon feedbacks, Arctic hydrological changes, and soil microbial responses to warming.
