Gurchathen Sanghera

Prof Gurchathen Sanghera is a Professor at the School of International Relations, University of St Andrews. He joined as a Lecturer in 2007, was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 2017, and became a Professor in 2023. He serves as co-Deputy Director of the Minorities Research Centre and holds roles in the Arts and Humanities Research Council's Peer Review College and the Commonwealth Scholarships Commission's Academic Adviser Panel. He holds a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (2020) and previously served as Pro Dean of Arts and Divinity (2012–2014) and Associate Director at the Scottish Graduate School for Social Sciences (2017–2020).

His research focuses on social justice, intersectionality of discrimination (caste, class, gender), and marginalized communities. Key themes include critical human rights frameworks, child labor in India, race/ethnicity dynamics in the UK, and qualitative research methodologies. His work bridges theory and empirical research, addressing global, national, and local scales.

His publications span geopolitical security, youth identities, child labor law, and multicultural citizenship. Recent work explores familial geopolitics, ontological security among minority youth, and the right to vote in Scotland's independence referendum. Earlier research includes analyses of misrecognition of Muslim identity and transnationalism among Pakistani Muslim youth.

Awards include the Royal Society of Arts Fellowship (2020). His advisory roles span educational policy and diversity initiatives. He has collaborated on projects like 'Delivering diversity: Race and ethnicity in the management pipeline', addressing leadership pipeline challenges.

He is affiliated with the Minorities Research Centre and has advised on grant initiatives. His research lab focuses on intersectional approaches to social exclusion, with a focus on South Asia and Scotland.
