Guo Xiangdong is an Adjunct Professor at the Department of Biomedical Engineering in the College of Engineering at Southern University of Science and Technology (SUSTech). He is also a Professor at Columbia University, where he has directed the Bone Bioengineering Laboratory since 1996. Dr. Guo earned his B.S. in Mechanics from Peking University in 1984, followed by an M.S. in 1990 and a Ph.D. in Medical Engineering and Medical Physics from Harvard University-MIT in 1994. He completed postdoctoral work in orthopaedic bioengineering at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor from 1994 to 1996.
His research spans multiple subfields of Biomechanics, including
- micromechanics of bone tissue,
- computational biomechanics,
- mechanobiology of bone,
- bone cell biomechanics,
- cell microcontrol,
- bone microstructure imaging and analysis.
His publications demonstrate a focus on advanced imaging techniques, bone microstructural modeling, and mechanobiological responses to mechanical loading. These studies often bridge engineering and medical research, particularly in osteoporosis and population-based bone strength analysis.
Scientific awards and honors include
- Young Investigator Recognition Award from the Orthopaedic Research Society,
- National Research Service Award from the NIH,
- CAREER award from the NSF,
- Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.
Professor Guo has also co-founded the international journal Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering and served as its co-Editor-in-Chief. He has been active in academic service, including review panels for NIH, NSF, and NASA, and leadership roles in the International Chinese Musculoskeletal Research Society, the Society for Physical Regulation in Biology and Medicine, and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering.
