Gunilla Carlsson

Gunilla Carlsson is a Professor of Nursing Science at the University of Borås, affiliated with the Faculty of Caring Science, Work Life and Social Welfare. Her research focuses on existential healthcare issues, particularly in psychiatric care and nursing contexts, emphasizing qualitative method development. She has held roles such as Director of Studies for the doctoral program 'Humans in Healthcare' and previously served as Head of the Section for Health Sciences (2014–2020). Her work integrates existential philosophy to explore patient experiences and learning processes in caregiving.

Education includes her doctoral thesis The phenomenology of the violent encounter - on threats and violence in psychiatric care (Växjö University, 2003). Her research interests extend to existential nursing, interprofessional learning, and the development of methods to capture complex patient experiences.

Advising and supervision are central to her role, contributing to doctoral education in healthcare sciences. Collaborations include projects on methodological creativity and interdisciplinary care studies within the Academy of Care, Working Life and Welfare.
