About
Guiyun Yan is a Chancellor’s Professor in the Department of Population Health & Disease Prevention at the University of California, Irvine. He serves as Program Director for the NIH-funded Center of Excellence for Malaria Research (ICEMR) in Ethiopia and Kenya and Project Director for a global infectious disease training program by the Fogarty International Center.
- Education
- PhD, University of Vermont, Biology (1994)
- MSc., Peking University, Biology (1989)
- B.Sc., China Agricultural University, Entomology (1986)
His research focuses on epidemiology of vector-borne diseases, particularly malaria and dengue. Key areas include:
- Disease vector ecology and behavior
- Population genetics and genomics of disease vectors
- Global climate and environmental changes in disease spread
- Vector intervention strategies
- Malaria transmission modeling
Recent publications span 2025–2024, addressing topics like malaria vector ecology in Africa/Asia, insecticide resistance mechanisms, serological biomarkers, and climate-driven transmission models. Collaborative work includes vector control strategies in Ethiopia/Kenya and genetic studies of Plasmodium and mosquito species.
- Scientific Awards
- Chancellor’s Fellow, UC Irvine (2019)
- ICEMR Award of Excellence, NIH (2011)
Guiyun Yan leads active NIH-funded research projects on malaria vector ecology, transmission, and control. He collaborates with institutions in Ethiopia, Kenya, and China, and his work informs global health policy for vector-borne diseases like malaria and dengue. His lab also explores vector genetics and adaptive intervention strategies.
