Dr. Guilhermina Torrao is a Lecturer in Transport at Aston University's Department of Engineering Systems & Supply Chain Management. She holds a PhD in sustainable mobility and road safety from the University of Aveiro (Portugal) and North Carolina State University (USA), and an MSc in Environmental Engineering from Clemson University (USA). Her career includes roles as a Research Scientist at Finland's VTT Technical Research Centre and a Research Fellow at Leeds University's Institute of Transport Studies. She has collaborated with automotive giants like Bentley and Jaguar Land Rover.
Her research focuses on automated vehicles, road safety, and sustainable mobility. Key projects include the EU-funded L3Pilot (Europe's first large-scale automated driving pilot) and SAFER Transportation for All Women in India, addressing gender-specific travel safety. She is also involved in the SOLUTIONSplus project promoting low-carbon urban mobility.
Teaching responsibilities include courses on impact assessment, sustainable transport planning, and data management at Aston University. She is a Chartered Engineer (IMechE) and Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
