Guida de Abreu is a Professor of Cultural Psychology at Oxford Brookes University's School of Psychology, Social Work and Public Health. Her research examines learning and identity development within sociocultural contexts, particularly focusing on mathematical cognition, immigrant transitions, and cultural diversity. She leads interdisciplinary projects like the EU Horizon 2020 NEW ABC initiative, which develops educational innovations for immigrant youth integration.
Her research explores three interconnected domains: 1) Cultural influences on mathematical cognition and home-school learning connections, 2) Identity development of children and youth in multicultural contexts, and 3) Impact of migration on adult cultural identity. This work addresses challenges posed by globalization through participatory methodologies.
De Abreu's publications primarily focus on cultural psychology, migration studies, and educational research, with recent work emphasizing immigrant identity negotiation, language brokering, and inclusive education strategies. As Steering Committee member of Oxford Brookes' Migration and Refugee Research Network, she coordinates interdisciplinary collaborations. Her NEW ABC project (2021-2024, €300k funding) co-creates educational pilot actions with young immigrants across 9 EU countries, focusing on youth translators and resilience-building through literature.
