Gregory Sandland

Gregory Sandland is a Professor of Biology at the University of Wisconsin – La Crosse (UWL), where he has served since 2007, progressing from Assistant to Associate Professor before attaining his current rank. He holds a PhD in Biology from Purdue University (2005), an M.Sc. from the University of Lethbridge (Canada), and a B.Sc. from the University of Victoria (Canada). His research focuses on host-parasite interactions, life-history evolution, disease ecology, invasive species dynamics, mathematical biology, and toxicology.

He teaches courses such as Parasitology, Mathematical Biology, and Communications in Biology. His work combines field studies and mathematical modeling to address ecological and epidemiological challenges, including swimmer’s itch control, invasive species management, and pesticide impacts on freshwater ecosystems. Collaborations with institutions like the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and interdisciplinary teams highlight his commitment to applied research.

Recent publications emphasize integral projection models for invasive species (e.g., silver carp and gizzard shad) and the efficacy of management strategies. He has also contributed to educational initiatives, such as an REU program fostering mathematical ecology training. His Teaching Award reflects his dedication to pedagogy and student mentorship.
