Gregory R. Wohl

Dr. Gregory R. Wohl is an Associate Professor and Department Chair of Mechanical Engineering at McMaster University, with an additional role as an Associate Member of the McMaster School of Biomedical Engineering. He holds a B.Sc., M.Sc., and Ph.D. from the University of Calgary (1991–2002). His research focuses on bone biomechanics, molecular mechanisms of bone adaptation, and nutritional influences on skeletal health. He investigates how mechanical loading, injury, and dietary factors like fatty acids affect bone structure and repair, with applications in tissue engineering and osteoporosis treatment.

Dr. Wohl teaches advanced biomechanics courses, including Biomechanics of Injury and Prevention (MECHENG 715/BIOMED 715) and Biomechanics (IBEHS 4B03/MECHENG 4BB3/6BB3/BIOMED 6B03). His work has been recognized with awards such as the President’s Award for Teaching (2015-2016) and the MSU Teaching Award. He collaborates on projects like microCT imaging for dinosaur cancer diagnosis and military health innovations.

His research integrates molecular biology (e.g., RT-qPCR), mechanical engineering, and nutrition to understand bone adaptation. Key topics include woven vs. lamellar bone formation, prostaglandin regulation by diet, and angiogenesis in fracture healing. He also explores laser-based bone ablation techniques and biomaterial bonding for biomedical devices.
