About
Dr. Gregory R Dion is a Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. His clinical expertise focuses on laryngology with specialization in voice disorders, airway stenosis, and professional voice care. Dr. Dion completed his medical training at Virginia Commonwealth University, followed by residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium, and fellowship in Laryngology at New York University.
Dr. Dion's research interests center on vocal fold biomechanics, laryngotracheal stenosis, and innovative treatments for voice disorders. His laboratory investigates the relationship between vortices, acoustics, and vibration in vocal fold asymmetries, as well as developing injectable therapeutic implants to reduce vocal fold scarring and airway stenosis. His work combines engineering principles with clinical laryngology to develop novel treatments for challenging airway conditions.
Dr. Dion's publication record demonstrates expertise across multiple domains of laryngology including vocal fold pathology, laryngeal stenosis, swallowing disorders, and surgical innovations. His research shows a consistent focus on both basic science investigations of vocal fold biomechanics and clinical studies evaluating surgical techniques and outcomes, particularly regarding Zenker diverticulum and cricopharyngeus muscle dysfunction.
Dr. Dion has secured significant research funding including:
- R01 DC009435: The Relationship Between Vortices, Acoustics, and Vibration in Vocal Fold Asymmetries (Role: Collaborator, $1,243,920)
- R21DC021038: INJECTABLE, TUNABLE THERAPEUTIC IMPLANT TO REDUCE VOCAL FOLD SCAR (Role: PI, $241,123)
- 1R01DC022510: Non-invasive Therapy using Lamina Propria Extract for Vocal Fold Healing (Role: PI, $646,482)
- Multiple Department of the Air Force grants for prehospital airway devices
Dr. Dion is actively involved in mentoring through his research programs and serves on multiple research teams investigating airway disorders and voice pathology. His laboratory work focuses on developing novel biomaterials and drug delivery systems for airway reconstruction, while his clinical research examines outcomes of endoscopic procedures for pharyngeal diverticula and swallowing disorders.
