Gregory D. Schmidt is a Professor in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at the University of Texas at El Paso. He earned his Ph.D. from Cornell University and previously taught at Northern Illinois University before joining UTEP in 2008. From 2008-2014, he served as Chair of the Department of Political Science.
His research specializes in comparative politics with a focus on Latin America, particularly Peru. He examines democratization processes, complex electoral systems, executive-legislative dynamics, and decentralization initiatives. His work has been supported by grants from the Social Science Research Council and Fulbright fellowships.
Dr. Schmidt teaches courses in comparative politics and American government, serving as co-chair of the Peru Section of the Latin American Studies Association in 2003-2004.
