Gregory Bowman is a Professor in the Department of Biophysics at Johns Hopkins University. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his Ph.D. from Princeton University, where he focused on X-ray crystallography of actin-binding proteins. As a postdoc at UC Berkeley, he studied structural mechanisms of DNA clamp loaders.
His research investigates chromatin remodelers and nucleosome dynamics, examining how ATP-dependent motors reposition nucleosomes and regulate DNA accessibility. Key areas include DNA-stimulated ATP hydrolysis, twist-defect formation in nucleosome sliding, and regulatory mechanisms controlling remodeler activity. His work has revealed how DNA distortion intermediates serve as regulatory checkpoints in chromatin reorganization.
He mentors numerous graduate and undergraduate students in biophysics research. Current lab members include research scientists and graduate students studying chromatin remodeling mechanisms. The lab utilizes biochemical, structural, and biophysical approaches to understand fundamental chromosome organization processes.
