About
Gregory B. Taylor is a Professor and Distinguished Faculty Member at the University of New Mexico (UNM), serving as Director of the Center for Astrophysical Research and Technologies (CART). He holds a PhD in Physics from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), awarded in 1991. His research focuses on observational astrophysics, with expertise in radio astronomy, cosmology, and studies of active galactic nuclei (AGN), clusters of galaxies, and gamma-ray bursts.
Professor Taylor leads the Long Wavelength Array (LWA) project, a collaborative effort to study the universe at low radio frequencies. This project involves multiple institutions, including the Naval Research Laboratory and the Air Force Research Laboratory, and explores phenomena such as ionospheric dynamics, meteor trails, and cosmic structures like supernova remnants. He also contributed to the VLBA Imaging and Polarimetry Survey (VIPS), a comprehensive study of AGN properties using Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI).
His teaching includes courses such as Astronomy 101, General Astronomy, Radio Astronomy, and graduate-level astrophysics seminars. Taylor’s work integrates observational techniques with theoretical models, emphasizing high-resolution imaging and multi-wavelength analysis. His research has advanced understanding of galactic magnetic fields, quasar environments, and transient astrophysical events.
He collaborates widely with institutions like the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) and has secured funding from agencies including the Office of Naval Research, NSF, and NASA. His lab, CART, supports cutting-edge instrumentation and data analysis in radio astronomy.
