Greg Mitchell serves as an Associate Professor of Kinesiology at Hope College and the Head Men's Basketball Coach. He joined the faculty in 2014 after 25 years of teaching English and physical education at the high school level, bringing extensive practical experience to his academic role.
His educational background includes:
- Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education from Hope College (1989)
- Master of Arts in Athletic Administration from Michigan State University (1999)
Professor Mitchell's expertise lies in Physical Education, Sports Coaching, Kinesiology, Exercise Science, and Health Education. He teaches courses such as Basic Methods of Teaching Physical Education, Health Dynamics, and Conditioning & Weight Training, focusing on preparing future educators through practical application of his coaching and teaching experience.
His coaching achievements have been recognized with multiple Coach of the Year awards:
- Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan Class C Coach of the Year (1997, 2013)
- Associated Press Sports Editors of Michigan Class C Coach of the Year (2012)
- Detroit News Class C Coach of the Year (2013)
- Lansing State Journal Coach of the Year (1997, 2012, 2013)
As an academic mentor, Professor Mitchell builds strong relationships with education-bound students and led a 2018 mission trip to Ghana with 13 student athletes through Hope's SEED program, emphasizing holistic student development beyond the classroom.
Under his leadership, the men's basketball program maintains Hope's championship tradition with a 199-96 record over 11 seasons, including four MIAA regular-season championships, four MIAA Tournament titles, and six NCAA Division III Tournament appearances.
