About
Grant Ritchie is a Professor of Chemistry and Head of the Physical and Theoretical Chemistry section at the University of Oxford. He leads research in laser spectroscopy, trace gas detection, and their applications in analytical chemistry, atmospheric science, and biomedical diagnostics. His work bridges fundamental studies of chemical kinetics with translational technologies like the molecular flow sensor (MFS) for non-invasive breath analysis.
- BA and DPhil from Trinity College, Oxford (supervised by Gus Hancock)
- NERC Peer Review College member
Research Interests: His group focuses on innovative laser-based measurement techniques for:
- Real-time breath analysis in healthcare (asthma, cystic fibrosis, COPD, PHOSP-COVID studies)
- Plasma diagnostics involving reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (RONS) for medical applications
- Atmospheric chemistry via cavity-enhanced spectroscopy and biofuel oxidation mechanisms
Collaborations: Works with physiologists, clinicians, engineers, and industrial partners. Developed MFS technology now integrated into clinical research pathways.
Scientific Awards:
- Ramsay Memorial Research Fellowship
- Junior Research Fellowship at St. John’s College
- Royal Society University Research Fellowship
Authored textbooks including Atmospheric Chemistry: From the Surface to the Stratosphere (Wiley, 2017). Previously served as Director of Graduate Studies for 5 years (2015–2020).
