Grant McKenzie

Grant McKenzie is an Associate Professor of Spatial Data Science at McGill University's Department of Geography. He leads the Platial Analysis Lab, focusing on interdisciplinary research at the intersection of geographic information science and behavioral geography. His work examines human activity patterns, geoprivacy, and urban mobility, with applications to shared micromobility services and geographic technologies. He holds a PhD from UC Santa Barbara (2015), an M. Applied Science from the University of Melbourne (2008), and a BA from the University of British Columbia (2002).

Research interests include geoprivacy, spatiotemporal analysis of urban systems, and the societal impacts of geographic information technologies. His recent studies investigate gender differences in recreational running, post-pandemic transportation recovery in NYC, and socio-demographic variations in e-scooter usage.

Key contributions include the PrivyTo privacy-preserving platform, the Platial k-anonymity framework, and the MODAP micromobility research platform. He has received awards such as the Emerging Scholar Award (2025) and Best Paper at GIScience 2023.

Grant advises students on topics ranging from geoprivacy to mobility equity. His funded projects include studies on power outages in Quebec and micromobility infrastructure optimization in Montreal.
