Professor Graeme Small is a faculty member in the Department of History at Durham University, where he has been affiliated since 2012. He also serves as Co-Director of Skills, Training, and Continuing Professional Development at the Institute of Medieval and Early Modern Studies. Previously, he held academic positions at Glasgow University, Keele, Newcastle, and Edinburgh, where he completed his undergraduate and postgraduate studies.
Research Interests focus on the historical and political culture of the Burgundian Low Countries, with emphasis on urban and courtly dynamics, manuscript studies, and the historiography of Johan Huizinga. His work spans French political life (1300-1500), town council minutes (13th-16th centuries), and cross-Channel comparisons in civic institutions.
His recent publications explore codicology, Burgundian courtly narratives, and urban governance mechanisms. Key themes include the Burgundian State, municipal records, and the interplay between political communication and institutional power. He has contributed extensively to edited volumes and journals, including Publications Du Centre Européen d’Etudes Bourguignonnes and BMGN - Low Countries Historical Review.
Scientific Awards:
- Recipient of the Prix Roger van der Weyden (1997) for a chapter on Valenciennes.
Supervision: He has mentored doctoral students on topics such as St Bridget of Sweden’s influence on Books of Hours, Scottish royal households, the court of Mary Queen of Scots, and historic conservation. Five of his former students hold university lectureships in History.
