Assistant Professor · Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) Research
Mount St. Joseph UniversityAbout
Gordon Ramsay serves as Assistant Professor in Pediatrics at Emory University School of Medicine and directs the Spoken Communication Laboratory at Marcus Autism Center. His research applies mathematical speech modeling to identify vocal biomarkers for early autism detection in infants, aiming to develop evidence-based intervention technologies for social communication deficits.
Dr. Ramsay holds a PhD in electronics and electrical engineering from the University of Southampton, a master's in speech and language processing from Cambridge University, and undergraduate engineering training. His international research background includes Marie Curie Fellowship work in France, positions at Canadian and Belgian institutions, and visiting roles in Australia and Ethiopia.
His primary research focuses on mathematical modeling of infant vocal development to understand how social engagement mechanisms derail in autism. Key investigations include prosodic interactions in bilingual infants, physiological voice measurements in autistic children, and longitudinal profiling of vocal biomarkers during critical developmental windows. This work bridges engineering principles with clinical neuroscience to create objective assessment tools.
Analysis of his 2019-2023 publications reveals interdisciplinary integration of animal vocal learning models, historical speech technology perspectives, and clinical autism research. The work consistently targets translational applications for early detection, with strong emphasis on mathematical techniques for measuring infant development trajectories.
Scientific recognition includes:
- Marie Curie Research Fellowship
- Fellow of Saybrook College at Yale University
As principal investigator for the NIH Autism Center of Excellence grant, Dr. Ramsay leads data analysis for vocal biomarker development while maintaining active media engagement. His research has driven numerous speaking engagements including TEDx Talks and industry presentations for Roche Pharmaceuticals, with coverage in major outlets like PBS/Nova, CNN, and The Guardian.
He directs the Spoken Communication Laboratory at Marcus Autism Center and collaborates with a multidisciplinary team including Ami Klin, Cheryl Klaiman, and Warren Jones to advance social communication research in autism spectrum disorder.
