About
Professor Gordon Mcfiggans is a Professor of Atmospheric Science at The University of Manchester's Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences, serving as Head of Research since 2018. His expertise spans atmospheric pollution's impacts on health and climate, aerosol particles' composition, and their environmental fate. He holds qualifications from the University of Sheffield (BEng), University of Leeds (MSc), and University of East Anglia (PhD).
Research focuses on aerosol-cloud interactions, secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation, and indoor/outdoor air pollution's health effects. He leads major projects like the INGENIOUS consortium on indoor air quality and coordinates international initiatives such as the EUROCHAMP2020 atmospheric simulation chamber network. Collaborations include NERC consortia (ACES, SAMBBA), EU-funded projects (EUCAARI, ATMO-ACCESS), and global studies in Beijing, Delhi, and Indonesia.
Key contributions include developing the WRF-Chem model for real-time UK air quality monitoring (manunicast.com) and advancing chamber-based studies on diesel particulates and biomass burning emissions. His work addresses UN Sustainable Development Goals related to clean energy, health, and climate action.
- Education:
- BEng Mechanical Engineering, University of Sheffield (1987)
- MSc Environmental Pollution Control, University of Leeds (1994)
- PhD Modelling Marine Boundary Layer Chemistry, University of East Anglia (2000)
Research interests include atmospheric composition, aerosol-cloud interactions, and pollution mitigation strategies. He actively contributes to policy through Defra reviews and collaborates with toxicologists, medics, and social scientists on health impact studies.
