Gordon Baym is a Research Professor and George and Ann Fisher Professor in Engineering Emeritus at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign's Department of Physics within the Grainger College of Engineering. He holds the title of Center for Advanced Study Professor of Physics Emeritus. His research focuses on extreme conditions in astrophysics and nuclear physics, including neutron stars, quark-gluon plasmas, and ultracold atomic systems. He has contributed seminal work on Bose-Einstein condensates, heavy-ion collisions, and quantum fluids.
Education: Ph.D. in Physics from Harvard University (1960), M.A. in Mathematics (1957), B.S. in Physics from Cornell University (1956).
Research interests include matter under extreme conditions, relativistic effects, and condensed matter physics. His recent work spans cold atom physics, quark-gluon plasmas, and the interplay of superfluidity and quantum field theory. Articles highlight studies on superfluid transitions, clock shifts in Fermi gases, and QCD phase structure.

He has advised numerous students and contributed to influential textbooks like Quantum Statistical Mechanics and Lectures on Quantum Mechanics.
