Glyn Howatson is a Professor in Human and Applied Physiology and Dean of the Graduate School at Northumbria University. His research focuses on optimizing human performance through interventions in training, recovery, and nutrition. Dr. Howatson's career began with military service and transitioned into academia after completing a PhD in Physiology (2005). His research has supported Olympic, World, and European medalists, emphasizing recovery strategies, neuromuscular adaptation, and performance optimization.
Key research interests include the stress-recovery-adaptation continuum, with a focus on interventions like tart cherry supplementation, electrical stimulation (tDCS), and phase-change material cooling. He has published extensively on topics such as muscle recovery, metabolic responses to endurance events, and gender equity in sports eligibility criteria.
Professional activities include invited talks at events like ISSSMC and ACSM conferences, and contributions to educational materials on sport science. His supervision includes Paul Hobrough’s study on shockwave therapy for basketball recovery.
