Giulia Galli
Professor · Theoretical and Computational Modeling
Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in LausanneAbout
Giulia Galli is the Liew Family Professor of Electronic Structure and Simulations in the Pritzker School of Molecular Engineering and Professor of Chemistry at the University of Chicago. She also holds a Senior Scientist position at Argonne National Laboratory, where she serves as director of the Midwest Integrated Center for Computational Materials (MICCoM).
Dr. Galli earned her Ph.D. in Physics from the International School of Advanced Studies in Trieste, Italy. Her academic career includes positions as Professor of Chemistry and Physics at the University of California, Davis (2005-2013) and as head of the Quantum Simulations group at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (1998-2005).
Professor Galli specializes in developing theoretical and computational methods to predict and engineer material properties from first principles. Her research addresses two critical challenges: designing sustainable materials for efficient solar energy capture deployable globally, and inventing materials for next-generation quantum sensors and computers. She combines quantum mechanics theories, high-performance computing, and data science to understand materials at the atomic level, with applications spanning renewable energy and quantum information technologies.
Giulia Galli has received numerous prestigious honors:
- Member of the National Academy of Sciences
- Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences
- Member of the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science
- Fellow of the American Physical Society
- Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science
- Materials Research Society Theory Award
- American Physical Society David Adler Lectureship in Materials Physics
- Feynman Nanotechnology Prize in Theory
- Medal of the Schola Physica Romana
- Tomassoni-Chisesi award by Sapienza University of Rome
- US Department of Energy Award of Excellence
- LLNL Science and Technology Award
Professor Galli leads research groups at both the University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory. Her team develops computational tools including Qbox and WEST codes for quantum simulations. She has secured substantial research funding to advance materials for sustainable energy and quantum technologies, collaborating closely with experimentalists to bridge theoretical predictions with practical applications. Her November 2019 Campus Lecture at EPFL titled 'Marveling at materials through in-silico lenses' demonstrates her commitment to communicating computational approaches to materials design.
