Gina Dent is an Associate Professor of Feminist Studies, History of Consciousness, and Legal Studies at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and concurrently holds a Professor title at The European Graduate School (EGS). She previously served as Director of the Institute for Advanced Feminist Research and Principal Investigator for the UC Multicampus Research Group on Transnationalizing Justice. Dent earned her PhD in English and Comparative Literature from Columbia University in 1998. She edited Black Popular Culture and is preparing two forthcoming books: Anchored to the Real: Black Literature in the Wake of Anthropology and Prison as a Border and Other Essays.
Her research focuses on intersections of race, feminism, legal theory, and popular culture. These themes recur in her academic work, emphasizing critical analyses of systemic structures and cultural narratives. Recent intellectual contributions include interdisciplinary explorations linking legal frameworks to racialized experiences, as seen in her upcoming publications.
As a scholar, she has secured significant grants, including leading the UC Multicampus Research Group. Her academic career reflects a strong commitment to feminist research and institutional leadership in higher education.
