Gilliane Monnier is Professor of Anthropology at the University of Minnesota, specializing in Paleolithic archaeology and Neanderthal behavior studies. Her research examines Neanderthal responses to climatic change 40,000-60,000 years ago through multidisciplinary excavations at Crvena Stijena, Montenegro, where she serves as co-Principal Investigator.
She pioneers new methods in lithic residue analysis using advanced techniques including FTIR microscopy, Raman spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry. Her work has been funded by four NSF grants and Fulbright awards. She co-founded the Advanced Imaging Service for Objects and Spaces (AISOS) and developed the Bachelor of Science in Anthropology at UMN.
