Gillian Weiss is Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies in the Department of History at Case Western Reserve University's College of Arts and Sciences. Her scholarship focuses on Mediterranean slavery, maritime art, and cross-cultural encounters in early modern France. Award-winning publications include The Sun King at Sea: Maritime Art and Galley Slavery in Louis XIV's France, recognized with the Leo Gershoy Award, Kenshur Prize, and David H. Pinkney Prize.
Research examines French imperial expansion, religious identity formation, and captivity-redemption systems through analysis of visual culture, diplomatic archives, and captivity narratives. Current work investigates Muslim representations in French history and Black Sea slave networks. Teaching and administrative responsibilities center on undergraduate curriculum development and historical methodology.
