Gillian Hampden-Thompson

Professor Gillian Hampden-Thompson holds a joint appointment as Principal of Josephine Butler College and Professor in the School of Education at Durham University. Previously serving as Head of School of Education and Social Work at University of Sussex, her research examines educational access, family policy impacts, and quantitative methodologies in social science research.

Her work focuses on educational equity through studies of family structure effects on achievement, widening participation in postgraduate education, and community engagement in schools. Current leadership includes serving on the national evaluation team for the 'A Better Start' programme.
